Position Description

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS), a novel academic unit that bridges the 17 schools and colleges at Boston University, invites applications for teaching-stream faculty positions beginning as soon as July 1, 2025. Qualifications required of all applicants include PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Depending on qualifications and experience, the successful candidate will be appointed as either a clinical assistant professor or an associate professor of the practice in CDS, carrying a teaching load of five courses per year at the undergraduate or master's level, covering foundational, core, or elective computing and data science subjects.

Qualified candidates are invited to submit their applications through the web portal available at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/29435.

Application materials include current curriculum vitae, a statement summarizing teaching and pedagogical innovation interests, an optional statement highlighting relevant applied or translational research experience in industry, and at least three letters of references. Applications are welcome from recent PhD graduates, postdocs, lecturers, or practitioners who are interested in an academic career focusing on teaching and mentorship of undergraduate students. Particular attention will be given to candidates with a record of pedagogical innovation in topics that are relevant to data science, most notably mathematical and algorithmic foundation, software and data engineering, data mining, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence.

Founded in 2019 and housed in an iconic 19-story building, CDS is a university-wide academic unit created to connect BU’s 17 schools and colleges through the common language of computation and data and to lay the foundation for innovation-driven, civic-minded computing, data science, and AI. Over 50 faculty members are already associated with CDS. Building on BU’s founding mission of equal access, including being first in the nation to admit women to medical school, to graduate a Native American physician, and to award a PhD to a woman, CDS is committed to building a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse scholarly community and to increasing participation of all talented students, especially women and other groups who are underrepresented in Computing and Data Sciences. Our university community welcomes differences, encourages open-minded exploration, and upholds freedom of expression.

BU is an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.

BU conducts a background check on all final candidates for certain faculty and staff positions. The background check includes contacting the final candidate’s current and previous employer(s) to ask whether, in the last seven years, there has been a substantiated finding of misconduct violating that employer’s applicable sexual misconduct policies. To implement this process, the University requires a final candidate to complete and sign the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” after execution of an offer letter.
