Position Description
Position Description: The Duke Master of Interdisciplinary Data Science (MIDS) program invites applications for an Open-Rank Professor position at the Data Science and Political Science interface. MIDS is a two-year degree program offering a substantive educational experience, not simply a data science credential. The MIDS curriculum is designed to support students from different educational and technical backgrounds, including asynchronous summer review modules, a three-week, in-person programming boot camp, and a fall level-up for students with less experience with programming for data science. Cohorts are limited to about 50 students per year, and classes are structured around authentic team- and project-based learning opportunities with extensive student feedback and close attention to the communication and collaboration skills crucial to effective teams. The majority of MIDS faculty members are shared with other Duke departments, and this appointment is intended to catalyze partnership with Political Science. The successful candidate will be expected to design and lead initiatives that will improve computational methods training both for entering MIDS students and incoming political science graduate students. The MIDS apprenticeship model of learning means that a record of effective student mentoring across all levels will be particularly important. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and be involved in program and departmental initiatives (e.g., capstone mentoring, admissions review) as needed. The term of this appointment is July 1, 2025 (or hire date) through June 30th, 2028, with an opportunity for renewal. The successful candidate is expected to have rigorous methodological training in analytical and quantitative methods, comprehensive data science skills, engagement with ethics as a key component of responsible data science, a track record of effective collaboration, and a graduate level training in political science. Applicants should submit a letter of interest describing their research and teaching agenda in no more than three pages, a curriculum vitae, graduate school transcripts, a writing sample, evidence of teaching excellence, and two letters of recommendation. Preferred Qualifications: • Ph.D., substantial research experience with a record of publication • Experience working with data-driven problems • Experience coding, ideally in Python (or R, Julia, etc.) • Familiarity with data science methodologies • Teaching experience and organizing class logistics • Experience as a mentor • A history of science communication and data visualization Duke is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer committed to providing employment opportunities without regard to an individual's age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
