Position Description

The Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (http://tdli.sjtu.edu.cn) invites applications for several tenure-track positions (“Fellows”) in observational astronomy. We are seeking candidates in all areas, from stars and exoplanets, gravitational waves/time-domain/high-energy astrophysics to galaxies and cosmology. Candidates with observational and/or instrumental experiences are encouraged to apply. Exceptional candidates may be considered for tenured positions (“Senior fellows” or “T-D. Lee Professors”). Observational/experimental astronomy is a major area that TDLI/SJTU is developing. As a new initiative, TDLI/SJTU is building the 4-meter spectroscopic telescope (Jiao-tong University Spectroscopic Telescope, JUST), to be completed in 2027, for time-domain science, cosmology and exoplanets.

The Fellows at TDLI are expected to carry out independent forefront research and supervise students (both Ph.D. and undergraduate students). They will have a reduced teaching load compared to typical university faculty. The positions are open to researchers of all nationalities, and will provide internationally competitive salary, housing subsidy, and start-up funds. The nominal start date is September 2025, but can be flexible.

TDLI is a national research institute named after the renowned Chinese-American physicist Tsung-Dao Lee (Nobel Prize 1957). TDLI is devoted to fundamental research and graduate training in particle physics, astrophysics and condensed matter physics. TDLI has an internationalized environment with English as its working language.

TDLI has a vigorous visitor’s program, and organizes topical workshops and conferences each year to create a scientifically stimulating environment. The astrophysics division currently has active research in high-energy/relativistic astrophysics, exoplanets, cosmology and laboratory (plasma) astrophysics. The division works closely with the department of Astronomy (DoA) at SJTU (http://astro.sjtu.edu.cn/en/), which currently has an active extragalactic astronomy research program. The TDLI astronomy division also works with its particle physics division, on particle astrophysics, dark matter search and other frontiers in fundamental physics.

Applicants should submit their applications at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/29501. They should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including a publication list), a research and teaching statement (total of four-page maximum). At least three reference letters should be submitted online at the same website. For other inquires please send an email to leeastronomy@sjtu.edu.cn.

For full consideration, all application material should be received before January 20, 2025. The search will remain open until the positions are filled. (Candidates who have already applied to TDLI’s general astronomy faculty positions before Nov.15 2024 need not apply again).
