Position Description

The International Center for Hadron Astrophysics (ICEHAP) at Chiba University, Japan, invites highly motivated and qualified candidates to apply for a Research Associate position focusing on the development of the Cherenkov detector modules for the IceCube-Gen2 neutrino observatory at the South Pole.

The neutrino astronomy group at ICEHAP has led several internationally recognized research projects, including the discovery of the first two PeV-energy neutrinos with IceCube, the first identification of a high-energy neutrino source with the multi-messenger observation following the high-energy neutrino event, IceCube-170922A. ICEHAP is also responsible for the highly sensitive and cost-effective optical sensors called D-Egg, which is one of the main detector systems for the ongoing IceCube upgrade. Based on the experience gained from the development of the newly designed optical modules and the production and calibration studies performed at ICEHAP, we are also expected to play a leading role in the development of new optical sensor modules for the planned IceCube-Gen2 project, the next generation of the ongoing IceCube observatory.

The successful candidate will have strong commitments to development and calibration of the next generation deep-ice optical detectors and associated software for the IceCube-Gen2. The selected candidate will also be expected to participate in the calibration and data analysis of the IceCube upgrade, which is scheduled to start taking data in 2026. A Ph.D in experimental high-energy physics, astroparticle physics, or a related field is required for this position. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension depending on budget availability.
