Position Description

The theoretical physics group at the State University of New York at Old Westbury (SUNY OW) welcomes applications for a grant funded, 3-year, postdoctoral position in applications of formal aspects of quantum field theory to the physics of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The postdoctoral fellowship candidate will also be affiliated with the Nuclear Theory Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).

The position is funded by the Department of Energy FAIR (Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research) grant "Novel Holographic Approaches to the Non-perturbative Dynamics of Proton Spin." which supports joint collaborative research between SUNY OW and BNL. The Principal Investigator (PI) is Dr. Andrew O'Bannon, with SUNY OW co-PIs Dr. John Estes and Dr. Matthew Lippert. The co-PI from the BNL Nuclear Theory Group is Dr. Raju Venugopalan.

Post-doctoral fellowship candidates should have a strong background in Quantum Field Theory methods and its applications to problems in high energy and nuclear physics. The position is funded from 2025 to 2028, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2025. The postdoctoral candidate will be employed by The Research Foundation for SUNY, however the postdoctoral candidate's time will be shared between BNL and SUNY OW. Salary and benefits will be provided by The Research Foundation for SUNY. BNL will support, in part, the incumbent's housing and travel expenses. The position will also include opportunities for teaching and informal mentoring of undergraduate students at SUNY OW and graduate students at BNL. Applications must be submitted through the link below.

Applications must include the following:
Cover letter
CV
Research statement

We are therefore keen to appoint someone based not only on their past achievements but also on the potential they show for the future, and we want to draw from the widest possible range of talents and backgrounds. We will also support the postdoctoral fellow in developing their career while maintaining a good work-life balance, through family-friendly policies and resources, including on-site childcare facilities at both SUNY OW and BNL.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree or foreign equivalent in theoretical physics or closely related field, with a record of independent research by August 2025. Campus position titles and salaries will depend on experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated record of research experience in Quantum Field Theory applied to problems in theoretical nuclear and particle physics.

Salary Range:
$55,000.00 - $65,000.00 commensurate with education and experience and includes a comprehensive benefit package, plus a housing allowance of up to $12,000.00. The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the United States.
