Position Function 

This position requires an experienced scientist in the broad area of dairy cattle nutrition and enteric methane mitigation. The individual would be required to investigate the effects of novel technologies that reduce enteric methane production using a variety of experimental approaches. Individuals should have strong expertise in the areas of dairy cattle nutrition and ruminal fermentation and methanogenesis. The person should also have a strong ability to independently develop and execute experimental designs to test scientific hypotheses related to the study of livestock methane, be able to leverage a variety of contemporary techniques to quantify changes in enteric methane emissions, and lead teams of individuals with diverse experience. The individual is also expected to have a strong familiarity with the dairy industry including major drivers and sustainability goals including requirements to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions. 


Anticipated Division of Time 

Execution of research studies – 80% 

Development of industry partnerships – 20% 
  • Establish and maintain communication with dairy industry partners including data sharing, impact projections, and strategy development to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions for dairy systems. 

This is a full-time (100% FTE) position and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a three-year appointment with possible extension depending on available work, funding and performance. 


Requirements

Ph.D. in life sciences with a strong background in dairy cattle nutrition, with a good understanding of the current field of livestock methane science.
 
Experience performing trials to study enteric methane production in mitigation in cattle including gas emissions, energy expenditure, and changes in milk production and rumen fermentation.

Effective use of different methodologies to study enteric methane production including but not limited to respiration chambers and GreenFeed. 

Proven ability to work independently, learn quickly and keep up with the rapid pace of livestock methane research advances and methods. 

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects. 

Compile and analyze research data, and document project results in manuscript form for publication in peer-reviewed journals. 

A minimum of three years postdoctoral experience or related experience with a publication record that exemplifies creative research thinking and progress. Publication record should also demonstrate expertise in dairy cattle nutrition.
 
Established collaborations with dairy industry partners. 

Strong communication skills with the ability to engage in teamwork/collaborations.

Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University. 


Supervision Exercised

The individual will be involved in relevant methods training for graduate and undergraduate students involved in research. No supervision required of this position.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
