Position Description

As part of the NextQuantum program initiated by the Innovation Research Center (IRC), organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), the Quantum Information Science Group (https://devsquis.snu.ac.kr/notice/?mod=document&uid=91) at Seoul National University (SNU) is accepting theoretical-research applications for one postdoctoral research fellow/senior research fellow position (58-80 million KRW per year incl. taxes) in the field of quantum computation. Selected position shall begin in 2025 but actual start date and salary are negotiable.

NextQuantum (https://next-quantum.com/) is the latest government-funded research center at SNU that aims to carry out massive long-term research projects in new-age cross-platform (hybrid) quantum computation. The center consists of 15 principal investigators, each possessing respective theoretical and experimental expertise and competent research groups. All principal investigators collaborate closely with the aspiration of realizing large-scale practical quantum computing devices through the development of noise-resilient and resource-efficient quantum algorithms and hybrid-platform hardware that go beyond purely-photonic systems.

The successful candidate shall work in the field of quantum computation with both Research Associate Professor Yong Siah Teo and Professor Hyunseok Jeong (Director of NextQuantum), 2 of the 15 principal investigators of NextQuantum, with focus on (but not limited to) quantum error mitigation, suppression and correction. Applicants who are either experienced in or express exceptionally strong potential in learning the above fields of study and possess technical skills in handling discrete-/continuous-variables and python programming are preferred.

The appointed position period is two years and extendable subject to research performance and funding conditions. The awarded position type would depend on the candidate’s qualification and experience. On-campus accommodations with modern facilities and reasonable rates are available for non-Korean researchers (https://snudorm.snu.ac.kr/en/gwanak-residence-hall/bkresidence-halls/introduction-of-bk-residence-halls/facilities/). Health and safety insurance and severance pay shall also be supported according to university regulations and employment laws. Additional financial support for research activities will be provided.

Seoul National University is South Korea’s top national university located in Seoul, near the center of the metropolitan capital city that is easily accessible with well-connected subway networks and other public transportations. South Korea is known for its rich culture, nature parks and historical attractions, traditional and international cuisines, vibrant night life, and economic stability (https://english.visitkorea.or.kr/svc/main/index.do).
