Position Description

The experimental high energy physics group at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position to work on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The CMS group at Notre Dame is led by Professors Abhisek Datta, Michael Hildreth, Colin Jessop, Kevin Lannon, Marc Osherson, and Mitchell Wayne. The group is actively involved in various physics analyses focusing on studies of the Higgs boson and searches for supersymmetry and other new phenomena. The group is also heavily engaged in the operation of the CMS experiment and its upgrade for the HL-LHC, contributing to the calorimeters, muon systems, tracking, and trigger, as well as playing an important role in the development of software and computing.

The successful candidate is expected to play leading roles in physics analyses, involving searches for di-Higgs production to measure the self-interaction strength of the Higgs boson, as well as in the construction of a new muon detector, ME0, which employs Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology. The position can be based either at Notre Dame or at CERN, with some travel involved between the locations as needed.

Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics or a related field and must have a strong record or interest in data analysis, detector operations and hardware/software development. The position is for three years and may be extended up to two more years upon mutual agreement. The anticipated start date is in Fall 2025, but the exact date is negotiable.

Interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, a brief research statement, and at least three letters of reference. The position will remain open until filled; for full consideration, applications must be submitted by June 15, 2025. For more information, contact Prof. Datta (adatta2@nd.edu).
