Duke University, Biomedical Engineering
Position Description
As a member of Dr. Bursac research group, you will be involved in various studies thatemploy cultured human and rodent cardiomyocytes, engineered heart tissues, and animal
models of heart development and disease. Specifically, you will engage in basic science
and applied research to explore the roles of different signaling pathways (e.g. MAPK, AKT,
etc) in regulating pro-proliferative vs. pro-hypertrophic cardiac phenotype in vitro and in
vivo. You will further explore sex dependency of these pathways. Your studies will utilize a
variety of research methodologies such as human iPS cell culture and differentiation,
generation of in vitro disease models, gene and protein expression analyses and
manipulation, viral gene therapy, pharmacological studies, gene editing, and physiological
measurements of cardiac electrical and mechanical function at a variety of spatial scales
from a single cell to whole organ. You are expected to be self-motivated, a good
communicator, able to work both independently and as a part of a larger group, publish in
high-impact journals, present at conferences, generate preliminary results for research
grants and career awards (e.g. K99), and mentor graduate and undergraduate students and
other trainees.
