Position Description

The Department of Biology at Boston University invites applications for Postdoctoral Associate Teaching Scholar (PATS) appointments starting September 1, 2025. These positions are designed for recent Ph.D. recipients planning to pursue academic positions that emphasize teaching, such as faculty positions at primarily undergraduate institutions or lecturer positions. Initial appointments are for one year, and typically renewed for 1-2 additional years based on satisfactory performance. The PATS position is a 12-month full time position.

Responsibilities for the position are distributed between teaching and scholarship. For the instructional component, the candidate will lead discussion sections and/or laboratories of undergraduate biology courses based on departmental need, as well as have the opportunity to develop and teach an undergraduate course in their area of expertise during the second year of their appointment. For the scholarship component, the candidate can choose to be involved in one of the following opportunities:

·         Laboratory Research: Research will be conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member in the department, with summers devoted primarily to research activities. Candidates should work with a potential PI to develop research plans. Additional information about our academic programs and research interests of faculty can be found at https://www.bu.edu/biology/

·         Curriculum Development/Pedagogical Research Initiatives: This track includes additional teaching responsibilities in the summer and the potential for curriculum development of current courses and/or educational research in collaboration with course instructors. Candidates should reach out to Dr. Kale Hartmann (hartma@bu.edu) to discuss current opportunities and develop plans.

Qualifications:

·         Early-career Ph.D. with degree in biology or related biomedical science, or biology education. We are currently particularly interested in candidates with a genetics or neurobiology focus, but all specialties are welcome to apply.

Required application materials:

Review of applications will begin on July 21, 2025 and will continue on a rolling basis until all available positions are filled. Please direct email queries to Dr. Kale Hartmann (hartma@bu.edu).

Salary for this position will be $67,500.

BU conducts a background check on all final candidates for certain faculty and staff positions. The background check includes contacting the final candidate’s current and previous employer(s) to ask whether, in the last seven years, there has been a substantiated finding of misconduct violating that employer’s applicable sexual misconduct policies. To implement this process, the University requires a final candidate to complete and sign the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” after execution of an offer letter.
