Position Description
The Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Experimental High-Energy Physics group to work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal based on performance, funding availability, and group needs. The anticipated start date is on or before October 2025.The successful candidate will join the Experimental High-Energy Physics group, which is actively involved in a broad range of physics analyses, including studies of top quarks, Higgs bosons, and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. The group has a long-standing history of contributions to the development and calibration of b-tagging for long-lived particles, large-R jet identification, and jet energy calibration. In addition, we play a leading role in the ATLAS Phase-II Inner Tracker (ITk) upgrade, with a focus on electrical services for the inner pixel detector and the optimization of b-tagging performance for the upgraded tracker.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in physics analyses and combined performance and/or detector activities;
- Publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals or other appropriate outlets;
- Mentor graduate students;
- Present research at national and international conferences.
Required Qualifications:
- Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in experimental particle physics by the time of appointment.
- Experience in data analysis, detector hardware, or software development in a high-energy physics experiment, along with strong programming skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in an international research environment are essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with machine learning (ML) in high-energy physics is highly desirable, though not required.
Appointment Details:
The position is expected to be based primarily at CERN in Switzerland, with the possibility of being based in the US if preferred and compatible with project needs. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation of renewal for a total duration of three to five years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
