Position Description
Professor of the Practice Position in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Duke University (Durham, NC) invites applications for a full-time Professor of the Practice (PoP) position at the level of Associate or Full Professor. This renewable, regular-rank faculty appointment will include both teaching and program leadership responsibilities.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, the new faculty member will serve in two leadership roles:
- Director of the Duke BME Design Health Program, a nationally recognized, patient-centered program that integrates interdisciplinary teams of students, faculty, and advisors in engineering, business, medicine, and nursing to address critical unmet healthcare needs.
- Associate Director of Graduate Studies for the Master of Engineering (MEng) program.
The successful candidate will:
- Lead the Design Health Fellows Program, guiding students through clinical immersion, needs-finding, prototyping, and commercialization.
- Manage daily operations of the BME MEng program, advise students, teach core and specialized courses, and support career development.
- Foster innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration across Duke, generating patents, prototypes, startups, and national recognition.

The department works closely with the Duke University Medical Center—one of the world’s most highly regarded clinical enterprises—located just across the street.
Qualifications:
Applicants must hold an advanced degree in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching, advising, or program leadership, with a strong commitment to student success. Expertise in medical device design, digital health, biotechnology, or clinical diagnostics (including point-of-care testing) is especially encouraged. Candidates with relevant industrial experience in product design, manufacturing, testing, and/or commercial deployment, or entrepreneurial experience, are encouraged to apply. Additionally, candidates with experience managing industrial relationships and collaborations in education and/or research are also highly encouraged to apply.
