Boston University — Director of Online Programs, MS in Software Engineering for Artificial Intelligence

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University invites applications for the position of Director for the MS in Software Engineering for Artificial Intelligence Online Program. This renewable-contract faculty position is a key academic and strategic leadership role, responsible for refining and advancing an already-conceptualized program into a high-quality, sustainable, and nationally competitive online degree.

Depending on qualifications and experience, the successful candidate will be appointed either as a Master Lecturer or Assistant Professor of the Practice in Electrical and Computer Engineering. This individual will provide academic vision, curricular leadership, and operational oversight for the program, working collaboratively with ECE faculty, College of Engineering (COE) leadership, and BU’s established online education infrastructure (BU Virtual). The program’s foundational goals, scope, and initial structure are already defined; the Director will lead the detailed development, launch, and continuous improvement of the curriculum while shaping the program’s long-term trajectory. Applicants for the position must have a post-graduate degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Ideal candidates will have leadership experience in academic program development, administration, or online education. The successful candidate will develop and teach courses during the initial rollout of the program, guiding its launch and refinement, after which instructional responsibilities may transition to other faculty.

Salary will be provided for the 12-month academic year. Possibilities of support in the summer include summer classes and various outreach programs.

Essential Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Provide vision and strategic direction for the development, growth, and continuous enhancement of the online MS in Software Engineering for Artificial Intelligence •Collaborate with ECE and College leadership to evaluate, design, and implement new online program initiatives that align with departmental and institutional strategic objectives. Lead the curriculum design, course development, and initial implementation of the program to ensure coherence, rigor, and relevance to current advances in artificial intelligence and software engineering. •Program Oversight and Quality Assurance Oversee the academic rigor, curriculum integrity, and instructional quality of the ECE online master’s program. Recruit and appoint qualified instructors, partner with faculty and instructional design teams to ensure effective course development and delivery, and champion innovative online pedagogy, assessment strategies, and student engagement. During the program’s early phase, the Director will personally design and teach the initial course offerings, modeling instructional quality and best practices. As the program matures, the Director will transition teaching responsibilities to other faculty while continuing to oversee program quality and evolution. •Administrative Management and Coordination Collaborate closely with the COE Graduate Programs Office (GPO) on the administrative management of COE’s online offerings. Coordinate program scheduling, staffing, and logistics, including the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of faculty, staff, and instructional personnel. Supervise Learning Facilitators to ensure consistent instructional support and high-quality course delivery. •Collaboration and Communication Serve as the primary academic liaison for ECE’s online MS program, maintaining strong communication with departmental leadership, BU Virtual, and external marketing and technology partners. Represent the program in institutional planning discussions and foster a collegial environment among faculty and staff engaged in online education.

This position can be 100% remote.
