Position Description
Academic Job Description
Department of Animal Science
Postdoctoral Associate
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.
Position Function
The CNCPS was modified to be able to predict nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) excretion, and this was published by Fox et al. (2004). Further, those predictions were refined and improved and partition N and P excretion between urine and feces on a quantitative basis (Higgs et al., 2012). In addition, the ability to predict methane production by lactating and growing cattle was incorporated (Van Amburgh et al., 2015) and this capability has been used to evaluate various feeding and management conditions for GHG emissions and the reduction of urinary and fecal N and P excretion (Van Amburgh et al., 2019).
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to lead a multidisciplinary project focused on two primary tasks: Developing a simplified version of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System that can use feed ingredients, chemistry and animal inputs from India to predict nutrient requirements and milk yield in India. This will involve adapting the CNCPS to a more linear system that can be used in a mobile app, if needed. In addition, the person in this position will be expected to conduct a comparative life-cycle assessment of milk produced under business-as-usual conditions and after implementing each management intervention. There will be requirements to develop data management systems that enable the use of the CNCPS and the evaluation of outcomes from changes to nutrition and cattle management in India.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop a simplified version of the CNCPS that can predict metabolizable energy and protein allowable milk with the least amount of feed and animal inputs under feeding and management conditions in India.
• Integrate the feed chemistry data being developed in a parallel project.
• Travel to India to help implement the updated model. This would be as needed and no more than two times per year.
• Conduct a comparative life cycle assessment of milk produced business-as-usual and after implementing each of the management interventions
• Collaborate with industry stakeholders and integrate feedback into the LCA and CNCPS.
• Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences.
• Contribute to the CNCPS development and support outreach efforts to disseminate findings to nutritionists and producers.
