Position Description

Occupational Summary Duke University’s Master's in Interdisciplinary Data Science program (MIDS) is seeking a Visiting Faculty and Scholar with expertise in quantitative finance research and teaching. The Quantitative Finance Concentration within the MIDS program is designed to train students to keep pace with the big data science revolution in finance and to prepare them with a strong quantitative background for future careers in finance, banking, and insurance. Building on traditional statistics, econometrics, and stochastic calculus, students are taught to solve real-world quantitative finance problems by integrating machine learning, artificial intelligence, and optimization techniques with economic and financial theory. The QFC features an industry and career-focused education that combines strong academic rigor with real-world case studies and projects supported by financial industry practitioners.

The successful candidate will have more than 15 years of academic teaching and research experience in financial risk management and regulation, as well as industry experience with leading international financial institutions, with a particular focus on Chinese financial markets. The candidate should have the ability to lecture and guide student projects in financial risk management, bank capital regulation, systemic risk, and quantitative approaches to credit, market, and liquidity risk, with an emphasis on translating theory into implementable models. The candidate should also build a research agenda at Duke focused on financial risk management, with particular attention to global and comparative perspectives. The candidate is expected to foster international collaboration between academia, regulators, and industry practitioners. In addition, they will provide mentorship and career guidance to QFC students by leveraging their extensive academic and industry connections, particularly in international financial markets.

The term of this appointment is July 1, 2026 (or hire date) through June 30th, 2027. Applicants should submit a letter of interest describing their research and teaching agenda in no more than three pages, and a curriculum vitae.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D., substantial research experience with a record of publication; 15+ years of experience in academic teaching and research in financial risk management; industry experience with leading international financial institutions; relevant industry experience with Chinese financial markets.
