Position Description
Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering is seeking a talented, driven, and innovative Executive in Residence (EIR) to support all aspects of the Master of Engineering in Design & Technology Innovation program. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Durham, NC. The program seeks to prepare students to become design and innovation leaders across a variety of product-, technology-, and design-focused roles, with a focus on emerging technology’s role in shaping human experience through products, services, systems, interactions, and transformations.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Teaching 4 courses per academic year that align with professional and academic expertise, and program needs
- Collaborate with program leadership on initiatives related to curriculum design, program assessment, and admissions review.
- Support industry engagement by cultivating and maintaining relationships with industry partners to enhance student learning, project-based experiences, and career opportunities.
- Participate in growth and management of initiatives such as labs, experiential learning, or applied research that connect academic preparation with industry practice.
- Support growth and strategic development of the program and related community of practice.
- Serve as a mentor and advisor to students.
Ideal candidates will bring a creative, human-centered, and design-driven mindset, evidenced through their academic and/or professional work. Additionally, they will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- AI and Computational Design: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning; Computational and/or Data-Driven Design
- Product and Hardware Development: Digital Fabrication and Advanced Manufacturing; Hardware-Software Systems; Edge Computing and IoT Systems
- Human-Computer Interaction: Human-Computer Interaction; Human-AI Teaming; Human-Robot Interaction
- Product-, User Experience, and Human-Centered Design: Quantitative User Experience Research; UX and Front-End Engineering; Technical Product Management; Human-Centered Design
- Emerging and Creative Technology: Speculative and Critical Design; Design Futures; Creative Technology; Science-based Applications of Design; Design Applications to Science
A master’s degree is required, with a doctorate or terminal degree preferred. In exceptional cases, relevant industry experience may be considered in place of a doctorate degree. The candidate should demonstrate teaching experience, preferably in a higher education or professional training setting. Ideal candidate would show evidence of teaching and designing learning experiences in an online environment. Experience in academic program-building, curriculum development, or collaborative educational leadership is preferred. Candidate should have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work across academic and industry boundaries.
