Position Description

Profs. Daniele Visioni and Doug MacMartin are seeking a Research Associate to conduct innovative research in the field of Climate Intervention, and in particular Stratospheric Aerosol Injections (SAI). This research position will advance cutting-edge approaches to understanding climate intervention impacts, including through statistical and dynamical downscaling, model hierarchy approaches, Machine Learning or other methodologies, while assisting in building a collaborative research group at Cornell. The position offers some independence in research direction, while emphasising mentorship of early career researchers and graduate students and the development of novel computational approaches to climate intervention challenges. The position will be partly funded through a multi-year grant by the Quadrature Climate Foundation, as well as by other funded projects in which the group is involved, such as by the UK Advanced Research and Invention Agency.

This project offers a unique leadership opportunity to expand existing collaborations with major climate research institutions, particularly leveraging established relationships with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the National Oceanic, Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The position emphasizes both technical innovation and research program development, connecting fundamental climate science with practical applications. 

Anticipated Division of Time:
  • Direct research program in climate intervention science, including supervising team members, performing climate model simulations and analysing simulations output. (50%).
  • Drive scientific output through high-impact publications, conference presentations, and grant proposals, as well as lead communication of complex climate science to diverse audiences (30%)
  • Build and maintain strategic collaborations with research partners, participate in relevant workshops, and pursue new funding opportunities to sustain and grow the research program (20%).

Minimum Requirements:
  • • Ph.D. in a mathematics, engineering or science field.
  • • Postdoctoral (post-grad) experience (minimum 6 months in government, academia, or industry) in climate science-related topics.
  • • Experience with high-performance computing and large climate datasets. 
  • • Track record of successful collaboration with national laboratories and research institutions. 
  • • Experience in communicating science to diverse audiences and commitment to public engagement. 

Preferred Requirements:
  • • Ph.D. in Earth System Science, Atmospheric Science, or related field. 
  • • Postdoctoral (post-grad) experience (3+ years in government, academia, or industry). 
  • • Strong publication record and proven ability to communicate science to audiences.

This position is full-time and will be located in Ithaca, New York, but is open to remote work. 

This is a one-year appointment with possible extension contingent on available work, funding, and performance.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
