Position Description
Visiting Lecturer for Multilingual Learners of English Pitzer College invites applications for a two-year, full-time Visiting Lecturer to teach courses designed for two sometimes overlapping groups of students: 1.) multilingual learners of English, including international students who speak English as another language, and 2.) students interested in developing a rich, theoretically-informed practice in multilingual pedagogies, second language acquisition theory and practice, and intercultural learning. The position is located in Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MLLC), an interdisciplinary field group that houses language and writing programs with a particular emphasis on community-based and experiential learning. The visiting lectureship carries a 3–3 teaching load and begins July 1, 2026. The ideal applicant will be an accomplished teacher and collaborative administrator whose practices are informed by new directions in the field of English language teaching. The candidate will have an interest in developing course offerings for the International Scholars Program, which offers courses on a range of literacies with the goal of empowering students to develop the sophisticated level of English language and academic discourse knowledge needed to participate fully in the challenging liberal arts education of the Claremont Colleges as they pursue an academic degree. Strong applicants will be committed to international education and cultural exchange and will have a record of success in developing and teaching courses that give multilingual learners access to high-quality educational experiences. In collaboration with the MLLC field group, the visiting lecturer would oversee the set of courses designed for students of the International Scholars Program, but open to all multilingual learners in the consortium. In addition, the Visiting Lecturer for Multilingual Learners of English would teach courses in foreign language pedagogies in support of our vibrant language and writing programs. Experience or interest in community-based teaching and learning is especially desirable. The Visiting Lecturer for Multilingual Learners of English would also contribute their expertise to the college through important but limited service. The successful candidate will partner with Admissions and the Study Abroad and International Programs office to approve English language test waivers for admitted international students and review applications to the International Scholars Program. The Visiting Lecturer will also connect students to comprehensive co-curricular support provided by the International Programs Office and Writing Center. In alignment with best practices, the candidate would design and lead one lunchtime faculty workshop on multilingual writing pedagogy or one workshop on multilingual writing for peer Writing Fellows in the Writing Center each semester. The Visiting Lecturer will teach a combination of the following courses: • MLLC 110: Intercultural Learning Portfolio, a half-credit, online, self-directed course which gives students studying abroad in external programs the chance to reflect on their experiences, deepen their cultural knowledge of the countries in which they are studying, and develop skills to become agents of intercultural understanding. • MLLC 100: Language and Community: Principles and Practice of Teaching English as an Additional Language, a course in which students learn second language acquisition and pedagogical theory while teaching English in the multilingual communities that surround The Claremont Colleges. • Four courses that constitute the International Scholars Program. The courses will be designed for students of the International Scholars Program, but open to all multilingual learners, on multilingual literacies and communication. The ideal applicant will use their expertise to develop an innovative and engaging set of courses that would complement the MLLC curriculum, as well as the mission of the ISP, where a small set of students would participate in the courses as a learning community during their first year at Pitzer College. Qualifications • Ph.D. or ABD in a relevant field (e.g., Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics, English, Rhetoric and Composition) or, alternatively, an M.A. in teaching English as another language (or its academic equivalent) and at least three years of experience teaching undergraduates. • Demonstrated excellence in teaching multilingual and international students, preferably at the undergraduate level. • Experience or strong interest in teaching language acquisition theory, including multilingual pedagogies. • Ability to collaborate across academic and co-curricular units. Pitzer College welcomes candidates who can contribute to the College’s mission and distinctive educational objectives, which promote interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, and concern with social responsibility and the ethical implications of knowledge and action. Pitzer College is an Equal Opportunity Employer. For the successful applicant with the relevant interests, affiliations are possible with the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chican@/Latin@ Studies, and/or the Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research, and Engagement. Collaborations with the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability, the Institute for Global-Local Action and Study, the Community Engagement Center, and the CASA Pitzer program are encouraged. To apply, submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, evidence of excellence in teaching and research, statement of teaching philosophy, description of research, and three letters of recommendation. Additionally, candidates should include a separate statement that addresses how their cultural, experiential, and/or academic background has the potential to contribute to the College’s mission, distinctive educational objectives, and core values. Compensation range: $71,513.00 The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. Pitzer College is committed to providing comprehensive benefits to eligible employees and their eligible dependents.
