Position Description

Pomona College seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of Computer Science to begin on July 1, 2027. We seek candidates with a strong commitment to i) inclusive undergraduate teaching across all levels of our curriculum; ii) mentoring a diverse student body and fostering a supportive learning environment; iii) developing a strong, independent research program that involves undergraduates and leads to peer-reviewed publications; and iv) helping build community within our Department and the College.

We welcome applicants with broad intellectual interests from a wide range of subdisciplines, with a preference for candidates whose research and teaching interests complement those of the current faculty (Computer Science Department Website) or who can contribute to expanding the department's curricular range and scholarly interests. The teaching commitment is four courses per year over two semesters of instruction (2-2). CS faculty are expected to teach at least two required courses among our introductory (introduction to programming and computer science, mathematical foundations, and data structures) and/or core (algorithms, languages and theory of computation, and computer systems) sequences. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand by their start date, usually July 1, 2027.

Our department values experience working with undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to improving higher education for underrepresented students through teaching, scholarship, or service. After graduation, recent CS majors have taken jobs in industry and national research labs, and have pursued graduate programs at top research labs.

Pomona College, located in Southern California, is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, which also includes Claremont McKenna, Scripps, Pitzer, Harvey Mudd, and Claremont Graduate University. Students can cross-register for courses at any of the colleges, which allows Pomona students to enjoy the advantages of personalized instruction and close faculty-student interaction combined with the intellectual and extracurricular resources typically found at much larger universities. Pomona's Computer Science department currently has 10 full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty members, and there are over 30 CS faculty across the Claremont Colleges. In collaboration with the Claremont College Consortium, Pomona College offers a variety of professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities for junior faculty, including the opportunity for entering faculty members to apply for a fully funded leave in their fourth year at the College.

A complete application includes a cover letter, a detailed curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, three brief statements–one addressing the candidate’s teaching philosophy, one addressing the candidate’s scholarship, and one addressing the candidate’s ability to mentor a diverse student body (https://www.pomona.edu/administration/academic-dean/faculty-jobs/how-prepare-diversity-statement), and three or more letters of reference, at least one of which evaluates the candidate's teaching. Please upload electronic copies of all materials to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32241" style="color: blue;">https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/32241.

Review of applications will begin on October 4, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. The salary for this position will range from $105,000 to $135,000 and will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
