Position Description

About the Lab

The Chory Lab at Duke University, part of the Center for Advanced Genomic Technologies, works at the intersection of directed evolution, synthetic biology, chromatin biology, and lab automation. We evolve proteins and other biomolecules using phage- and robotics-assisted continuous evolution, build custom robotic systems for high-throughput screening, and develop open-source automation tools including PyLabRobot and PyHamilton. We are committed to scientific rigor, collaboration, and training the next generation of scientists.

Position Overview

We are hiring a full-time Associate in Research to support a grant-funded project in continuous evolution and molecular engineering. The Associate in Research will carry out molecular biology and high-throughput experiments, contribute to building and running selection systems, and help analyze the resulting data. The role works closely with PhD students and postdocs, and responsibilities will be tailored to the project and to the candidate’s strengths. This is a strong fit for someone planning to apply to PhD or MD programs and looking to build a deeper research foundation first.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine molecular biology, including cloning, plasmid construction, PCR, and bacterial culture, in support of active research projects.

  • Help build, run, and troubleshoot continuous evolution and selection experiments, including work on our robotics and high-throughput screening platforms.

  • Prepare and process samples for downstream assays and sequencing, and help maintain associated protocols and records.

  • Analyze experimental and sequencing data, and contribute to figures, reports, and manuscripts.

  • Keep accurate, well-organized lab records and manage reagents and materials for ongoing experiments.

  • Participate in lab meetings, present updates on your work, and contribute to shared lab operations.

  • Help onboard and support undergraduate students as needed.

Qualifications

  • A B.S. (or higher) in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.
