Position Description

Tenure Track Position in Sociocultural Anthropology

Pitzer College invites applications for a tenure track position in sociocultural anthropology at the assistant professor or advanced assistant professor level specializing in the histories and trajectories of capitalism, colonialism and other global technologies of governance, including those pivotal to realignments in the global order. Research may include, but is not limited to, analysis of racial stratification, dispossession, imperialism, neoliberalism, development, migration, settler colonialism, decolonization, social movements, and resistance. We particularly welcome candidates focusing on South Asia, Africa (outside of West Africa), or Indigenous peoples. The Claremont Colleges currently have anthropologists working in East Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States, and we are not seeking applicants working in these areas, with the exception of those studying indigeneity in the Americas.

The successful candidate should be prepared to teach one or more courses that embed ethnographic analysis within historical approaches. The new faculty member will teach in their areas of specialization and contribute one or more courses required for the Anthropology major (e.g., Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology, History of Anthropological Theory, or Field Methods in Anthropology) as well as periodically teaching a writing-intensive course in the college’s first-year seminar program. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or be ABD and are expected to have a Ph.D. in Anthropology by the starting time of the appointment.

Pitzer College welcomes candidates who can contribute to the College’s mission and distinctive educational objectives, which promote interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, and concern with social responsibility and the ethical implications of knowledge and action. Pitzer College is an Equal Opportunity Employer. For the successful applicant with the relevant interests, affiliations are possible with the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chican@/Latin@ Studies, and/or the Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research, and Engagement. Collaborations with the Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability, the Institute for Global-Local Action and Study, the Community Engagement Center, and the CASA Pitzer program are encouraged. To apply, submit a Letter of Application, current curriculum vitae, evidence of excellence in teaching, teaching evaluations, research statement, 1 article length writing sample, and three letters of recommendation. Additionally, candidates should include a separate statement that addresses how their cultural, experiential, and/or academic background has the potential to contribute to the College’s mission, distinctive educational objectives, and core values.
