Department of Food Science Postdoctoral Associate The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. Position Function We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated postdoctoral associate to conduct experimental and theoretical research that aims to develop the next generation of extrusion processes for flavor removal and texturization of plant protein using supercritical carbon dioxide in the department of Food Science at Cornell University. This individual will be required to investigate different strategies to generate novel products and characterize their properties and performance using instrumental and sensory analyses. To provide robust scientific insights, this position will also carry out modeling and validation of processes of utility. Anticipated Division of Time • Design and conduct experiments to produce extruded products with desirable characteristics (30%) • Collect, analyze and evaluate data, using appropriate methodologies (20%) • Modify system setup and process protocol to enhance robustness and efficiency (15%) • Model process performance and conduct validation studies (15%) • Document results and prepare reports and papers for publications (10%) • Lab management, including oversight/supervision of Undergraduate and/or Graduate students, equipment maintenance, and ordering of supplies as needed (10%). Requirements For this position we need an individual with the following qualifications: • PhD in Food Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering • Sound background in engineering or science with emphasis on process development • Knowledge of fabrication and operation of high pressure systems • Computational competences with MATLAB and COMSOL • Fluent in English, both written and spoken • Experience in working in multidisciplinary teams and ability to engage with professionals in related fields and organizations • A strong sense of initiative and responsibility and social and interpersonal skills. Supervision Exercised The position will involve partial lab management and supervision of graduate and undergraduate research assistants. Pay Ranges:
The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
- Prior relevant work or industry experience.
- Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
- Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
- Unique applicable skills.
