Position Description

The Boston University Department of Biomedical Engineering (BU BME) invites applications for a senior, tenured faculty position in Biomedical Engineering, all research areas included. This will be the inaugural Edward Damiano endowed Professorship appointment. The department embraces a philosophy of convergent research, which integrates questions, methods and resources from multiple traditional disciplines in pursuit of solving fundamental challenges and complex problems. This approach attracts scientists inclined to engage in highly collaborative research, and encourages their work in interactive spaces, sharing ideas and technologies. Research thrusts in BME span all length scales and most organ systems of the human body. Primary areas of interest are: Biomechanics and Mechanobiology, Systems, Synthetic and Molecular Bioengineering, Women's Health, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Neural Engineering, Biomaterials and Nanotechnology, Biophotonics and Biomedical Imaging, Computational Modeling and Data Sciences, and Diagnostics and Biosensing.

The mission of the College of Engineering is to expand the power of engineering to transform lives at scale. Our strategic plan embraces a convergent approach to research and education to generate the most impactful solutions for societal needs. We seek to create a new kind of engineer, one who values the diversity of expertise, perspective, thought, and disciplines needed to accelerate progress towards solving complex challenges. The College has 143 primary faculty and is ranked 15th among engineering schools at private institutions and 32nd among all engineering schools. The College has been recognized by ASEE for its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and degree outcomes. We are proud that Boston University, an AAU institution, is where Martin Luther King Jr. earned his PhD and the first American university to award a PhD to a woman. We are eager to welcome colleagues who will contribute to ensuring BU is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and a place where all members of our community can thrive.

BU BME is a top-ranked department and one of the largest in the nation with 42 tenured or tenure-track primary faculty. We attract exceptional graduate students and faculty at all levels and have strong ties to the BU School of Medicine and other top medical research centers in the Boston area. Research activity led by primary BME faculty exceeds $30M per year. Our faculty benefit from strong infrastructure, nurtured by being one of only three awardees of a Whitaker Foundation Leadership Award and funding from the Coulter Foundation, to translate research advances to societal impact. BU BME faculty lead and participate in many high-profile, inter-disciplinary research centers, including the Biological Design Center, NSF-funded CELLMET Engineering Research Center, BUNano, Neurophotonics Center, Center for Systems Neuroscience, Photonics Center, and Hariri Center for Computing and Computer Engineering.

Senior hires, who will hold a tenured appointment in BME, must hold a PhD in an appropriate area, have a strong history of external funding, and be internationally recognized for distinguished contributions in their fields. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a robust, extramurally funded research program building on existing strengths and new collaborations, and to mentor junior researchers effectively. BU also places high value on excellence in teaching. The salary range for Full Professors in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering is $225,000-$275,000.
