Position Description
The National University of Singapore invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in quantum computing and artificial intelligence, to start in 2027. The successful candidates will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator, Assistant Professor Yuxuan Zhang, and with the wider Singapore quantum AI ecosystem. Both positions are fully funded, the initial appointment is typically for two years with the potential for renewal, and a competitive salary will be offered. The group works at the interface of quantum information, quantum many-body physics and machine learning, with one organising goal: quantum computations that are both verifiable and practically useful. Research directions include: 1)Quantum advantage and its classical boundary — peaked circuits and efficiently verifiable advantage, together with tensor-network and Pauli-path methods that map where classical simulation stops. 2)Quantum simulation of many-body and open systems — non-Hermitian dynamics, mixed-state phases of matter, and thermal state preparation. 3)Machine learning for quantum computing — compiling many-body dynamics into short circuits, neural quantum states, and learning noise and control from device data. Theory-leaning, numerics-leaning and hardware-facing projects are all available. Postdocs will have opportunities to work with industry partners in quantum computing, including Quantinuum, Google and IBM, and to take part in an ongoing collaboration spanning North America, Europe and Asia. Postdocs are encouraged to develop independent projects alongside collaborative ones, and will have opportunities to co-supervise PhD and undergraduate students. Regarding Singapore: the country is investing in quantum at unusual scale. Its Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2030 plan commits about S$37 billion — roughly 1% of GDP — to research over the five years from 2026, with quantum among the priority areas, building on the S$300 million National Quantum Strategy already launched in 2024. The Centre for Quantum Technologies at NUS is being developed into a national R&D centre, and industry has followed. The result is a place offering both academic depth and unusually direct access to industry partnership.
