Position Description
The Pratt School of Engineering, Institute for Enterprise Engineering at Duke University, is seeking an Adjunct Instructor to mentor and coach mature, mid-career, masters-level engineering students in an online environment. The Mentor-Coach will assist with 1 section each semester and 2 sections per academic year.
Our Online 540 Mentor-Coach will work with the enrolled students of our Online 540 MEM/MENG core course. Our enrollment ranges from 15 – 45 students per semester.
The position requires approximately 10 hours per week.
Candidates must have a comprehensive understanding of organizational behavior, management/leadership development, developmental coaching and engineering management. They can attain these competencies through combinations of OJT and formal education, but they must bring at least 15 years of successfully managing and leading people, preferably in STEM environments. Engineering training is a strong plus.
Adjunct Instructor is a non-regular rank faculty position.
Our Online 540 Mentor Coaches are expected to:
- Become very familiar with ALL Course Material [Professor’s Videos, PPTs and Course readings/videos]. Online 540 Mentor-Coaches need to master course content in order to provide quality, course-aligned and informed, developmental coaching.
- Construct a comprehensive Mentor-Coaching Plan [with assistance from the professor]
- Contact Students to offer Mentor-Coaching
- Conduct Mentor-Coaching opportunistically throughout the semester
- Grade/Offer Coaching Comments on Assignments
- Log notes on any student information that might affect their final grade, or that might help the Teaching Team coach the student
- Weekly Discussions – Read & comment briefly [to teams, not individuals]
- Respond to student messages [redirect to TAs if admin/logistical/IT issue]
- Send occasional Announcements to students, as warranted
- Collaborate with TA’s to ensure accurate, timely recording of Assignment grades on our Excel grade sheet
- Grade Final Exam [with Prof and TA’s]
- Offer course improvement recommendations [kaizen]
