Position Description:

The Department of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks highly qualified candidates for a full-time Assistant Professor position in High Energy Physics. Candidates with expertise in the phenomenology of theoretical particle physics, broadly construed, and in experimental high energy physics are encouraged to apply. The Department of Physics is committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment, with a focus on diversifying the faculty. We are seeking faculty who can teach in these and other areas while contributing to the diversity and excellence in our programs and courses through their research and teaching.

Successful candidates are expected to establish and maintain an active and independent research program, teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and provide service to the department, the university, and the profession. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors.

The University of Illinois Department of Physics has strong programs in theoretical and experimental High Energy Physics. Current active research areas in high energy theory include a broad range of topics in phenomenology, computational theory, and formal theory. The research program in experimental high energy physics is focused on the ATLAS program at the Large Hadron Collider. The high energy group also benefits from synergies with leading interdisciplinary centers advancing high-performance computing and machine learning including the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) as well as Illinois’ strong programs in nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics, relativity and cosmology, and atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Interdisciplinary connections are further fostered by the Illinois Center for Advanced Studies of the Universe (ICASU), the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST), the Nuclear Physics Lab, and our involvement with the SQMS Center at Fermilab. Our faculty and students are affiliated with and have access to several world-class experimental and computational facilities located in on-campus multidisciplinary centers and laboratories. Please visit https://hep.physics.illinois.edu/hepg/index.html for more information on the high energy physics group.

A doctoral degree in Physics or a related field is required at the start date, and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The typical salary range for the Assistant Professor position is $110,000 to $140,000 for a 9-month service basis. Full consideration will be given to applications received by December 16, 2024. Applications will be evaluated as received. Applications received after that date may be considered until the position is filled. A start date is expected in the fall of 2025; however, this is negotiable.
