Position Description

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in high-contrast imaging and exoplanet science. We are seeking motivated candidates with diverse research experiences to join Prof. Jeffrey Chilcote's research group, which focuses on cutting-edge research in direct imaging.

The successful candidate will contribute to an ongoing direct imaging survey utilizing the CHARIS integral field spectrograph (IFS), positioned behind SCExAO at the Subaru Telescope. The CHARIS IFS, located behind SCExAO at Subaru, is currently conducting an ambitious survey aimed at discovering and characterizing directly imaged exoplanets, expanding our understanding of exoplanetary systems.

Depending on the applicant's skills and research focus, additional involvement may include commissioning activities for GPI 2.0 and/or participation in astronomy instrumentation development projects at Notre Dame. The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI 2.0) is undergoing significant upgrades at Notre Dame to enhance its capabilities as part of its relocation to Gemini North. First light for GPI 2.0 is anticipated in 2025, with initial science operations and broader surveys to follow.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field. A strong background in observational astronomy, particularly in high-contrast imaging, exoplanet research, or astronomical instrumentation is highly desirable. This position is for an initial term of two years, with the possibility of a third year based on satisfactory performance and available funding. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the applicant’s experience and qualifications.

The University of Notre Dame is committed to excellence. The University of Notre Dame is located in South Bend, Indiana and provides a friendly environment and affordable cost of living. The successful applicant will receive health care and benefits. More information about being a postdoctoral scholar at Notre Dame can be found at http://postdocs.nd.edu.

Candidates should provide a cover letter, CV, a 3-page research statement, publication list and arrange to have three letters of recommendation submitted. Please contact Jeffrey Chilcote with questions about the position. Applications will be reviewed when received and applications received by January 2, 2025 will receive full consideration. Applications submitted after will be considered while the position is open.
