Position Description

The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) at the University of Tokyo invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position and a fixed term project assistant professor position in the Center for Data-Driven Discovery  (CD3, https://cd3.ipmu.jp/, founded in 2023). CD3’s mission is to advance our understanding of the Universe through innovative applications of data science and machine learning, fostering collaboration across disciplines and engaging with the broader scientific community.

CD3 members play leading roles in major international projects, including the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) imaging survey, the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) survey (both with the 8.2m Subaru Telescope), and the LiteBIRD CMB space mission. Faculty members are also deeply involved in projects such as the Rubin Observatory LSST, Simons Observatory, Euclid, Super-Kamiokande, Hyper-Kamiokande, T2K, XENON, and Belle-II (see the full list at https://cd3.ipmu.jp/projects/). The unprecedented precision of these data creates new statistical and computational challenges, providing fertile ground for innovation. CD3 also leads AI/ML educational efforts in Asia, with our yearly AstroAI Asian Network Summer School.

We seek candidates with a strong record in computationally intensive research, including (but not limited to) data analysis, algorithm development, machine learning, numerical simulations, and high-performance computing. Candidates who are ready to lead interdisciplinary research programs bridging multiple domains are especially encouraged to apply. Substantial computing resources are available locally at Kavli IPMU, the University of Tokyo, and nationally.

Kavli IPMU offers a highly collaborative and international environment. The institute hosts more than 600 international visitors annually, and fosters new collaborations through daily interdisciplinary interactions, such as the well-known 3 pm “tea time.”

We are committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion (see our Code of Conduct: https://cd3.ipmu.jp/info/#code-of-conduct). We particularly welcome applications from individuals traditionally underrepresented in science, including women and gender minorities, persons with disabilities, and researchers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Faculty are encouraged to work abroad for up to three months per year.
