Position Description
Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in our general engineering program for the 2026-27 academic year, with a possibility to renew for the 2027-28 year by mutual agreement. (A Fall 2026 semester only adjunct appointment for the course below is also a possibility.)
The Department of Engineering seeks candidates with a Ph.D. in chemical or mechanical engineering or a related field who will excel in teaching in a broadly-based undergraduate curriculum (https://www.hmc.edu/engineering/curriculum/). Industrial or other practical experience in the field is valued.
The department seeks candidates who can teach in our ENGR082 Chemical and Thermal Processes class:
The basic elements of thermal and chemical processes, including: state variables, open and closed systems, and mass balance; energy balance, First Law of Thermodynamics for reactive and non-reactive systems; entropy balance, Second Law of Thermodynamics, thermodynamic cycles, and efficiency.
Additional teaching opportunities include the department’s other required courses in engineering sciences, participation on teaching teams in the design and systems engineering sequences, and more advanced courses in the applicant’s area of specialty. The position will also include advising a sponsored project in the Engineering Clinic program, which requires occasional site visit travel and regular meetings with students, student leaders, project sponsors, and the Engineering Clinic staff.
