Description

The Department of Music and the Interdepartmental Program in Engineering Science at Brandeis University invite applications for a cross-disciplinary Florence Levy Kay Postdoctoral Fellowship beginning in the fall of 2027. This two-year fellowship supports early-career scholars whose work bridges disciplines to approach timely issues in compelling, exploratory, and collaborative ways. The salary for this position is $64,000 (nine-month, academic year salary) at the rank of lecturer and also includes a research and travel budget of $4,000 per year with negotiable relocation funding for the initial year. The successful Kay Fellow in Music and Engineering will teach one course per semester (for a total of two courses per year) and will contribute to building and facilitating connections across the Sciences and the Creative Arts at Brandeis and beyond. Teaching responsibilities may entail existing courses in the Music department such as "Introduction to Electro-Acoustic Music" or "Electronic Music Composition and Production" and upper level technical electives in the Engineering Program in the candidate's area of expertise (e.g., signal processing or synthesis). This position is subject to budgetary approval.
We seek a candidate whose research combines creative practice with technological innovation and who is poised to make novel contributions to human/machine music-making, signal processing, and instrument and interface design. We are particularly interested in Fellows whose scholarship can build upon and expand relationships among the Brandeis Electro-Acoustic Music Studio (BEAMS), the MakerLab, our Sound and Image Media Studio, the Automation Lab, and growing Engineering facilities, and will showcase the intersections of music and engineering in public-facing events. Candidates must demonstrate a high degree of familiarity with music technology, electronic music composition, and relevant engineering principles and must hold a Ph.D. in one of the associated fields by the date of appointment. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, personal statement, list of works and performances (if relevant), the names and contact information for three referees, and one example of work that demonstrates the candidate’s approach to blending art and technology. The personal statement should address the applicant’s aspirations for research, teaching, and community or public engagement around the intersection of music and engineering, focusing on what they seek to accomplish during the two-year fellowship (no more than five pages, although shorter is acceptable). Only online applications will be accepted. Application materials may be uploaded here: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/33084.

First consideration will be given to applications received by December 15, 2026.

Questions about the position can be directed to the Search Committee Co-chairs, Prof. Brad Garvey (bradfordgarvey@brandeis.edu) and Prof. Jonathan Krones (jskrones@brandeis.edu).
