This National Science Foundation program is a full time undergraduate research opportunity at the University of Notre Dame. We seek applicants who have a strong background in science or engineering and an interest in international development. One of the goals of this program is to increase opportunities for people who are underrepresented in science and engineering, including women, racial and ethnic minorities, veterans, people with disabilities, students returning to school after having kids or working, and students whose parents did not attend college. We want a diverse group of participants who can appreciate, respect, and support one another, and who can bring their unique experiences to bear on problems facing people who live in very different circumstances from most Americans. We are looking for co-workers who are self-starters, who like to "edison around", and who have made an effort to get involved in science beyond the classroom. Federal rules require that all REU students be US citizens or permanent residents. Rising college sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible, along with community college students who will matriculate at a 4 year college as a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in the fall. Notre Dame students are not eligible for REU funds but can participate in the projects through other funding mechanisms. NSF-funded participants receive a $3,000 stipend, full room and board, and a $500 travel allowance. A $500 conference supplement and up to $1000 in supplies budget are part of the award. Participants may apply for a second year of support, which may include international travel related to their research project. The Academic Jobs Online application coversheet that you are about to fill out includes some questions that are not relevant for undergraduate students. Please include the following information on the coversheet: your name and email, name of your college and department, address and phone number at school, home address and phone number, and the degree you are studying for and your anticipated graduation date. You can reply "N/A" to the other questions (like where you received your PhD). You will need to supply the names and email addresses of two science or engineering instructors who are familiar with your academic and/or research performance. The AJO site will send them email requests for recommendation letters, so make sure you warn them to be on the lookout for those emails. You may upload unofficial copies of your transcripts to the site, but your official transcripts will be needed to complete your application package. Please arrange to have your official transcripts sent to:
