The Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics (BCCP) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for BCCP Postdoctoral Fellows and Cosmology Data-Science (CDS) Fellows, in cosmology at 100% time (full-time) with an anticipated start date in summer or fall 2017.

The candidates will be considered for two different types of Fellowships. The first one is a BCCP Fellowship. The Fellows are expected to carry out independent research on topics of their choosing in cosmology. The second one is a CDS Fellowship. The Fellows will have half their research devoted to a specific cosmology project of the BCCP, working as a scientist in a research group with all of the expected goals of project planning, data collection, data reduction/analysis, publication, and conference-presentation of results. The other half of each CDS Fellow’s research will include developing computational and data science tools and software for broader community. The CDS Fellows, in particular, are strongly engaged with the new Berkeley Institute for Data Sciences (see, which brings together this range of expertise. Both Fellowships will be for two years with the possibility of one-year extension. Further extensions beyond this may be possible subject to availability of funds.

We are especially encouraging applications in the intersection areas between cosmology, computer science, fundamental physics and astrophysics. In addition to being considered for these Fellowships, applicants will also be considered for grant-supported postdoctoral positions with BCCP members. BCCP Fellows will have the opportunity to interact and work with the broad spectrum of cosmology researchers in the Berkeley Astronomy and Physics Departments, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). The experimental and observational cosmology programs at Berkeley include supernovae, galaxy clustering (including baryonic acoustic oscillations), weak lensing and cosmic microwave background, in addition to a broad theoretical cosmology research program. The Fellows will also find a rich data-science environment at UC Berkeley and LBNL, with world-expert researchers in both computer science and domain science aspects of this emerging field. Information on the BCCP's current activities and membership may be found at the BCCP's website:

Basic qualifications: All Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree requirements except the dissertation at the time of application.

Additional qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree by the start date.

Preferred qualifications: Intersection areas between cosmology, computer science, fundamental physics and astrophysics.

Salary range: $58,000-$66,000

Diversity Statement: BCCP is interested in candidates who will contribute to the diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their research.

Family friendly statement: UC Berkeley has an excellent benefits package as well as a number of policies and programs to support employees as they balance work and family.

To apply, please go to the following link: Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit updated curriculum vitae, bibliography, and statement of research interests by December 1, 2016. Applicants please ensure your letter writers provide their letters of recommendation by the same date.

All letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality: prior to submitting their letters. The position will remain open until filled.
