New Position at Brandeis University: Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Chair in Jewish Education Research

Brandeis University announces a new faculty position, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Chair in Jewish Education Research, to begin in Fall 2014. We expect that the appointment will be made at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, although an appointment for a more advanced candidate with exceptional qualifications may be considered. This position will be shared between (a) a department appropriate to the candidate’s intellectual background and (b) the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate for this new chair will - pursue a robust program of research in Jewish education and publish broadly; - participate actively in and assume responsibilities within the intellectual community at the Mandel Center and within a particular department appropriate to her or his background; - teach two courses per year; - contribute visibly to the field of research in and practice of Jewish education nationally; - serve on University or departmental committees as appropriate.

Qualifications: Candidates should hold a doctorate in Education, Jewish Education or a related field, or have pursued research in or on Jewish education; should have a record of scholarship appropriate to his or her career stage as well as a rich research agenda; should be able to demonstrate evidence of successful teaching; and should possess an understanding of and experience with a variety of Jewish educational settings (day schools, supplementary schools, camps, academic Jewish studies, etc.). Candidates should be comfortable moving between the academy and the field of practice, and between Jewish and general education, and should aspire to effect positive change in the field of Jewish education through the production of scholarship in various forms. A scholarly background in one or more areas of Jewish studies is also desirable. Ideal candidates will have a research interest in the study of learning, learning outcomes, assessment, students’ understanding or sense-making, and/or other aspects of learners’ or participants’ experience of educational settings.
