Occupational Summary:

The Director of Global Health at Duke Kunshan University, China leads the Global Health Research Center (GHRC), and supervises the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to operate and grow the MSc-Global Health Master’s program (MSc-GH). Reporting to the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Director of Global Health is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the global health area to ensure the highest quality of education and research. He/she oversees the recruitment and management of world-class faculty and staff for GHRC and MSc-GH. He/she is also responsible for growing the academic and research activities related to global health.

Essential Duties:

The Director of Global Health has several essential duties outlined as follows:

Leadership and governance

The Director of Global Health plays a leading role in developing the vision and mission of global health, with inputs from other relevant faculty and staff. He/she will oversee the research portfolio of GHRC and the MSc-GH program being implemented at DKU. He/she should provide guidance to the DGS of MSc-GH on education activities, particularly as they impact and require faculty hiring and development. He/she will, in cooperation with the Dean of Graduate Studies, provide support to the Dean of Undergraduate Curricular Affairs and Faculty Development in building connections between the undergraduate global health effort and the MSc-GH program and GHRC, involving both student learning and faculty research support. Building upon the achievements of the first eight years, his/her main duty is to take the GHRC and MSc-GH to the next level so that it is recognized globally for its high caliber research and innovative education.

Faculty recruitment and development

The Director of Global Health will oversee the DGS of MSc-GH in developing and implementing an annual faculty recruitment plan for the MSc-GH program, and for faculty retention. He/she is expected to supervise the DGS of MSc-GH to undertake performance evaluations, re-appointments and promotions for all faculty and staff members in MSc-GH.

Student recruitment and development

The Director of Global Health must play a leadership role in growing and advancing student recruitment activities, in support of the MSc-GH program. He/she is expected to support the DGS of MSc-GH to develop a vibrant network of feeder schools and related channels to ensure adequate numbers of qualified MSc-GH applicants each year.

Administrative activities

The Director of Global Health is responsible for the development of an annual budget for GHRC and will supervise the DGS of MSc-GH to create an annual budget plan for MSc-GH. He/she will also oversee the effective implementation of the approved budget plan and the administration of funding for GHRC and MSc-GH. He/she must raise external funding from domestic and international sources to support GHRC and MSc-GH. He/she will closely work with Duke Global Health Institute and Duke-NUS Global Health Institute.

 

Qualifications:

  • Have an MD or Ph.D. degree and 10 or more years of relevant experience, preferred at academic institutions with a record suitable for a tenured faculty appointment at Duke Kunshan University. Working experience in both China and other countries is highly desirable.
  • An institution builder who understands the challenges and opportunities of working within and building a new university.
  • A strategic leader who can creatively and systematically create and develop ways to improve the quality and visibility of GHRC and MSc-GH.
  • Knowledgeable about the evolving nature of the global research landscape in the 21st century.
  • A strong problem solver and critical thinker with a strategic thinking mind set, and at the same time a person who is hands-on. The qualified candidate must have a strong commitment to innovation and creative expression regarding the evolution and development of research and education programs.
  • A solid team player who understands the value of collaboration and partnership in an academic setting.
  • Experience with research and budget planning and management.
  • Capable of securing external funding to support research and education activities.
  • Competence in cross-cultural communications and the ability to work with faculty, students and staff in a multicultural setting.
  • Fluency in Chinese is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of contemporary China and the Chinese higher education environment is desirable.
