The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for Department Chair, with a concurrent appointment as tenured Professor. Appointment will be located at the Tempe campus with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2016. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The ASU Department of English is one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive environments for education and research in the discipline. The department serves over 1,800 undergraduates and over 300 graduate (masters and doctoral) students across a variety of programs including literature, creative writing, linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, film and media studies, rhetoric and composition, and English education. The department houses the Writing Programs for students on the Tempe Campus and has a robust and growing set of online offerings including online bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Creative Writing MFA is nationally ranked and PhD programs partner with the MLA’s Mellon-funded Connected Academics project.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences through the Dean of Humanities, the Chair will provide administrative leadership and academic vision, and will engage a diverse faculty in shaping a productive, collegial environment that advances departmental goals and objectives. The Chair will also provide strong leadership in fiscal planning and administration, development and donor relations, the promotion of scholarship and external funding, and in exploring and developing opportunities for collaboration within and beyond the university.
- A terminal degree in English or a closely related field
- An established record of achievement commensurate with the rank of tenured Professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU
- Substantial relevant administrative experience
- A record of externally-funded research
- Experience with program development
- Experience with transdisciplinary collaborations
- Involvement with community-based initiatives
